Nissans new VR30 Twin Turbo Motor is getting some special treatment from EcuTek with their new RaceRom Version 3 Update.

EcuTek Technologies has surpassed expectations with this latest update, giving us tuners the ability to safely control and monitor boost, and has made it possible to eliminate one long time pest with this engine. Boost Spiking on shift.

If you are not aware, these engines spike boost massively on shifting, as the ECU has no Boost recovery or stabilization feature in the stock ECU that compensates boost levels or Wastegate levels when the automatic transmission is shifting. This causes boost to momentarily "spike" up very high before the ECU can make a correction AFTER the shift completes.

So What exactly goes into this new update from EcuTek? Lets take a look ...

First Lets talk about 4 Way Map switching, because this is AWESOME Stuff.

How does this map switching work? What is it?

The stock ECU has one "tune" inside it. Which has a set boost level, set ignition levels, and target fueling enrichment. These values never change, not even when you change or add a modification to the car. The boost target will always be what the ECU has set from factory, as will the ignition.

EcuTek has made it possible for you to have FOUR "tunes" inside your ECU that you can switch from at any time using either your drive mode selects (normal, sport, eco, etc) or using their ECU CONNECT BlueTooth device.



So What Things are changed when you "switch" a map using EcuTek Software on your vehicle?

Here are two examples we have created, a higher than stock target map with leaner fuel setup for E30 Ethanol mixture, and a map made as a safe mode with very low boost targets.

In stock form your ECU will always be on "mode 1" because that is the only mode that exists in the ECU. EcuTek has added 4 Modes, or 4 map switches.

Using their ECU Connect you can, while the car is running, switch directly to another map or mode, and the ECU will switch to all of those map mode settings on the fly, instantaneously.  

Here is an example of all the target maps that are changed when you switch to "mode 2" in our example tune. 


Did we forget to mention EcuTeks boost control allows for BOOST BY GEAR? 

In our example Map Mode 2, You simply press the button on your phone, or switch your drive selector from "eco" to "normal" (this is setup previously in the tune file that is flashed to the car) and it will switch to this mode on the fly. From Gear 2 to Gear 5 your boost is raised to 2.1 bar (16psi of boost) while maintaining lower targets in your highway gears. The Fuel Map is also switched to the Map Mode 2 Fuel map, which targets a leaner Air Fuel mixture in boost, to create more torque with the E30 fuel mixture. EcuTek has also added another feature to ensure your fueling is stable as you switch maps. Direct control over fueling using a 3D Fuel Multiplier table.

EcuTek has also added ignition advance maps to match with each mode. That way each and every Map Mode can be individually tailored to the needs of the driver. The possibilities are endless. 

Here is our example Map Mode 4. This is a "safety" map example. Lets say your intercooler fluid (these cars use water to air intercoolers) is getting excessively hot and your car is hitting a limp mode, or losing power. Or you see the oil light flicker on the dash.. whatever the reason you have a back up mode to get you home or get you off the road as safely as possible.

Fueling is set to be much richer than stock, ignition timing is lowered and boost is set to a very low 6 PSI. Injection mode fueling is compensated so that the car does not go overly rich in higher RPM. Target boost is lowered in all gears.

A map like this can be an additional safety measure on top of the safety measures that EcuTek has already added in their new RACEROM Feature File V3.


Tuning the VR30DDTT motor is a delicate process. The Turbochargers used on this engine are very fast spooling and engineered specifically to maximize available torque as fast as possible for as long as possible. This means that tuning the turbochargers and the boost levels require additional fine tuning and an eye for the small details. EcuTek has added multiple boost correction and compensation maps to ensure that boost is completely stable and reliable when properly tuned. This software version allows for a custom coded version of proportional compensation to the Wastegate control (basically a map to ensure that the Wastegate is where it is suppose to be when the desired boost level is met, and if it is not in that location this map activates to add a CORRECTION to the Wastegate duty table to get it back in place). All of this is done on the fly, nearly instantaneous using EcuTeks new custom code for this vehicle.


One of the most important and the most critical component to properly tuning the VR30 motor is having correct and reliable boost control. EcuTek Technologies has now made this possible.

Using EcuTeks new Wastegate features us tuners are now able to eliminate these massive boost spikes that happen during upshifting at full throttle.

 The two maps shown below are EcuTeks new controls that allow us to fix this issue. EcuTek has added an ignition compensation on shift feature that allows us to retard ignition which reduces engine power on shift, creating a safer shift environment and a WasteGate Compensation feature that allows us tuners to set additional Wastegate arm opening angles based on the boost pressure the ECU reads and the timing of the shift.


This is something that is impossible to adequately control with the stock ECU and impossible to tune out without having the additional measures that EcuTek has added using their custom RACEROM features.
